“There is no doubt that the sense of satisfaction that comes from creating oneself objectively in the world through manual skill gives a person a calm, peaceful and dignified character.”
Matthew B. Crawford
All the senses, including vision, are extensions of the sense of touch; the senses are specializations of skin texture, and all sensory experiences are modes of touch and thus related to tactility. Our contact with the world occurs at the boundary line of the self, through specialized parts of the membrane that surrounds us.
Anthropologist Ashley Montagu’s view, based on medical evidence, highlights the importance of the tactile realm:
- [The skin] is our oldest and most sensitive organ, our first means of communication and our most effective protector. Even the transparent retina of our eyes has a layer of transformed skin… The ancestor of our eyes, ears, nose and mouth is touch. Touch has transformed into other senses and has differentiated; that is why touch has long been considered the “mother of the senses”.
All sensory experiences are forms of touch and are thus related to tactility. Touch is a form of feeling that integrates our experience of the world with our experience of ourselves. It is in this way that my body remembers who it is and where it is in the world.
